"Hop Off #2" in West Brunswick

- Thu 3rd June (info below)

The first event at Estonian House was a great success. Lots of dancing, lots of excellent music and all within the confines of a beautiful 1920s venue...so make sure you don't miss the next "Hop Off" - Thursday June 3rd. Some important points of interest for "Hop Off 2":

1) JDE will be supporting a fundraiser for Princes Hill Secondary College - A number of talented students will be heading off to New York later this year as part of an arts, media and music trip. To help fund this trip, bottles of wine featuring art work created by the students will be for sale at "Hop Off". To grab your own piece of art and support arts in schools, look out for the wine stand at "Hop Off 2". Limited edition bottles of red and white will be sale for $15 - a bargain!

2) Dance Lesson - beginning at 7pm, a beginners swing dancing lesson will be run by swing patrol ($15 including general admission). You don't need to bring a partner, come along and learn to dance, meet people and have a great time!

3) Online bookings will be accepted for tables of 10 or more. Bookings can be made here.

4) Michael McQuaid's Red Hot Rhythmakers will be playing two wonderful sets of hot 1920s jazz. Great to listen to, excellent for dancing!

5) There will be a bar selling beer, wine and softies AND pizza, all at very reasonable prices. Other food options are available on Melville Rd, however we would ask you not to bring the food into the hall.

Late Hour Boys CD - Online Sales

Michael McQuaid's Late Hour Boys are heading to Europe in June and July and to celebrate the occasion they have just recorded their very first CD, Hustlin' and Bustlin'. Details of the tour can be found here

While the LHB were planning on having a CD launch, unfortunately time and logistics have made it impossible. But rather than tell you how good the CD sounds without giving you an option to buy it, JDE is happy to sell it on behalf of the Late Hour Boys for a limited time (until June 19!).

The Late Hour Boys have made only 500 CDs and have already sold 55 of these...thanks to Noosa and Peninsula jazz club people. The band is hoping to take 400 CDs to Europe with them which means: there are very few CDs left to sell to Australian audiences (about 50)!

If you would like to purchase your very own copy of Hustlin' and Bustlin' while they last, please use the link below. The cost is $25 including postage within Australia (enquire here for overseas). As soon as they have sold out this link will be removed.

Musician Profile - Sandra Talty

Sandra will be performing with the Red Hot Rhythmakers at "Hop Off" on Thursday June 3rd. For anyone who doesn't know about Sandra or haven't heard her sing, here's a closer look at this talented drummer/singer.

Hailing from Canberra, Sandra began her musical career when she started learning orchestral percussion at the age of 9. In 1996 she began playing with the Jubilee Jazz band, led by a young Michael McQuaid. Sandra made her public debut as a solo vocalist in late 1996 when Jubilee Jazz were asked to open a show for the Len Barnard All-Stars. She went on playing drums and singing (usually at the same time) with jazz bands and orchestras in ACT and NSW.
In early 2001, Sandra moved to Melbourne to pursue a career in Industrial Design. Sandra continued to play at jazz festivals in NSW and Victoria, winning the John Ansell Youth Encouragement Award for 2001 at the 7th Annual Wagga Wagga Jazz Festival. Later that year Sandra also won the Victorian Jazz Club's Youth Encouragement award for 2001. Since then she has performed with many of Australia's most highly-regarded classic jazz musicians and bands both in Melbourne and at jazz festivals around Australia, including the Creole Bells and Michael McQuaid's Red Hot Rhythmakers. Sandra also leads the Sweet Lowdowns, whose second album Cuttin' Capers won the 2008 Bell Award for Best Australian Classic Jazz Album.

Sandra's singing style is reminiscent of some of the most popular singers from the 1920s and 1930s and is particularly suited to this early music. Her influences include such greats as Connee Boswell, Mildred Bailey, Annette Hanshaw and Billie Holiday. Sandra will be singing live with Michael McQuaid's Red Hot Rhythmakers on June 3rd at Estonian House.
