Newsletter #9: October 2010

Hello and I hope you're all well out there. This newsletter will be rather short and sweet and just in time for "Hop Off". It's great to see the weather improving (although as I write this it's hard to think over the rain!) and hopefully the opportunities to listen to live music...

  1. Swedish Jazz Kings in Australia - Oct 2010
  2. "Hop Off" - 7th October - last minute reminder
  3. Croydon Main St - 9th October
  4. Real Estate = Jazz!

Swedish Jazz + Roy Williams in Australia through October

One of Europe's premier 'classic jazz' bands, the Swedish Jazz Kings were formed in 1985 by Tomas Örnberg to recreate the sound and spirit of his favourite jazz artists of the 1920s. This is the band's eighth Australian tour, so they clearly have many fans here. Joining Tomas Ornberg (clarinet, soprano saxophone) and Bent Persson (trumpet) for this tour will be Göran Eriksson (banjo/alto saxophone), Bo Juhlin (sousaphone), Keith Durston (piano) and their special guest for this tour, British trombonist Roy Williams, renowned as one of today's masters of mainstream jazz.

Here is a link to their Full Tour Itinerary.

Their Victorian gigs include:

  • Sat 23/10 - LF Payne Hall (Chelsea Town Hall) - 8-11pm
  • Sun 24/10 - Bentleigh Club - contact Diana Allen - 12:30pm - 4:30pm
  • Sat 30 & Sun 31/10 - Wangaratta Jazz Festival

  • Hop Off – Thursday October 7th - Last minute reminder

The nights are lighter, longer and warmer, so here's your chance to welcome the better weather with a bit of Swing Dancing. Come early to warm up, have a lesson at 7pm and dance until 10pm with one of the best bands on the scene, Michael McQuaid’s Red Hot Rhythmakers. Full Details here

Still only $10 with a great (and cheap) bar at the beautiful 1920s venue, Estonian House.

    Thursday 7th October
    6:45pm -10:00pm
    Estonian House
    43 Melville Rd, Brunswick West
    $10 entry ($15 includes lesson)
